  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

When I was around 13 years old, I discovered Heavy Metal bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica and Black Sabbath, which led me to falling in love with the sound of electric guitar. When I started playing I wanted to play like Randy Rhoads, Jimmy Page and Tony Iommi. I wanted to express my teen angst with sound! As I expanded my musical tastes I also fell in love with players and singers like Jeff Buckley, Bon Iver and Nick Drake, who could also express so much with their writing and with the way they approached the guitar differently. That led me to delve deeply into fingerstyle playing on an acoustic guitar. On the side I also studied classical guitar with some renowned teachers like Berta Rojas and Virginia Luque to develop my touch on the instrument. I just love the sound and feeling of playing a plucked instrument like the guitar, but I also love singing! It's very difficult to choose a favorite :)
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

My favorite band is probably Radiohead! Once I got into them I used to listen to it at all times, even if I put one of their albums today I just get reminded of how much I love music and what it can make you feel... I am also lately obsessed with bands like "Black Country, New Road", "Of Montreal", "Big Thief" and "Television" which could all be put under the alt-rock umbrella, I guess! I'm not a big fan of boxing things in genres, I think music works best when it's not constrained by that kind of limitation!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I think teaching songwriting is so exciting. It can be truly difficult for some people to break through their barriers and insecurities around expressing themselves in that way, but once they do it's something that adds so much value to someone's life that they couldn't imagine living without it. Writing for me is a way to externalize emotions and thoughts in a healthy way, and can be a valuable tool, besides just being a wonderful time. There are certain tools that make writing more methodical, which I think can be dangerous, but there are also strategies to approach writing that can be helpful in providing an outline for what you want to express, making the process itself a little easier!
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I think no instrument is particularly harder than another to master. Some instruments are easier to begin playing on due to the way they are played (A violin takes more time to learn to get a decent sound of than a piano, for example), but when we are speaking of true mastery, regardless of your instrument it takes years of dedication, perfect practicing and a deep love and appreciation for music. The thing is, you don't have to be a "master" to enjoy yourself! Playing simple chords and strumming songs can be just as fulfilling as being a virtuoso and it all comes down to how you approach practicing and playing music, bringing an intention to have a good time and grow and not to take it as a challenge that you must overcome. Music is an eternal journey and not a race with a finish line.
  • What are your keys to success?

To me, full dedication to music was very important. I decided early on I was going to be a professional musician and never really bothered with anything else. I felt it was my duty to become a musician and that nothing else would ever make me happy, so I didn't really have a choice! I think that having no plan b guides me into putting my all into this. Other keys are paying attention to your mental health and physical health, practicing with proper posture and intent so that we don't shorten our playing lives!
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

I'd love to meet Thom Yorke, even though I'm sure he is not a big fan of meeting fans hahaha I'd just like to thank him for what his music got me through and for inspiring me so much musically. If I can add a couple of musicians who have sadly left us, I'd have loved to have met David Bowie or Jeff Buckley. The kind of art they both did expressed such a wide range of feelings and is so complex and multifaceted to me, I'd have loved to have heard more about their perspective on life and on being an artist.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I feel like music school is a place where they throw so much information at you, (sometimes conflicting information!), that it's just impossible to try and absorb it all. Theory classes at first felt like a drag, specially because I already knew a little bit and the early classes were very basic. I had a much better time once I started following the things that my ears really loved, and then connecting that to the theory, not blindly follow what a teacher would say was the right thing or a rule and wonder why it just sounded like an exercise, and not music. That led to my real discovery that music theory is descriptive, not prescriptive, which means theory is not a set of rules to be enforced, it's a series of suggestions and naming conventions that make it easier to communicate with other musicians. I think the biggest breakthrough I had in my musical career was learning to appreciate and love music theory for what it is, which led to a changing relationship with music as a whole as I could appreciate it even more.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I really make every class personal to the student. I have experience in many different genres like rock, heavy metal, soul, rnb, pop, alternative, jazz and classical playing in live bands or solo settings, so I can guide people to many stylistic colors. I love trying to find the kind of player or singer that you want to be and don't have a curriculum or agenda I want you to follow, I just want you to have a good time learning about music, whatever level you are at and however much you want to learn. Lastly, I just have such a wonderful time teaching, which I think makes it so much more engaging to the student. I've had many teachers who did not seem engaged or excited about teaching and that was always so sad to me, so I try to rectify that in my teaching as much as possible. I can't wait to work with you!
