Sobre João

I've been a student for most of my life. Challenged by a chronic curiosity, this has pushed me into searching and practicing a different set of skills. From linguistics to music, permaculture, history, electronics, science, economics... and the thrive to learn more is endless, just as the world is packed with stones that shouldn't be left unturned.
I've been self-taught for the most part, as I have been a student of the homeschooling method, through a Christian school in the United States, most of my learning has been done by self-research and peer-to-peer support, this has allowed me to understand the great importance of community work and gift economy.
I graduated from school and was accepted to study Psychomotor Rehabilitation, at the University of Human Kinetics (Faculdade de Motricidade Humana), during that time [2011] I initiated my tutoring experience mostly with small children. It was challenging to be studying and working, but at the same time absolutely gratifying. I realized I was good at it, and more students started coming, mostly from international schools, with the IB (International Bacculerete) curriculum, and especially students with developmental disabilities, such as dyslexia, ADHD, and high-functioning autism.
Teaching became a passion, and the university became less of a concern. I dropped out of university in my last year to later become a restaurant manager and Instagram content creator at a vegetarian restaurant (House of Wonders) in Cascais. With this experience was able to fully sense client demands, and managing expectations. Four years later of working in the restaurant and tutoring privately, I left House of Wonders to take a CELTA course at the IH (International House) in Lisbon, I was able to backbone my teaching methods and store a few more creative ideas, shortly after that I started working at OIS (Oeiras International School) as a teacher for Extracurricular Activities, and on that same year, I also took a Permaculture Course at Terra Alta which was revigorating (you can ask me more about it if you wish).
Just as the year ended I enrolled on another course this time to teach YL (Young Learners), it sure did straighten some misaligned vertebra I had from my previous backbone.
Then COVID-19 arrived and here we are... Online lessons.
Moral of the story: curiosity has certainly not killed this cat, who doesn't leave any stone unturned to get you to where you want to go!

2) Learn more about the student (preferences, hobbies, cultural interests…). (First lesson)
3) Develop a monthly goal on the ILP (Individualized Learning Plan) (Second lesson)
4) In relation to the student's preferences and interests establish the themes for the lessons. (Second lesson)
5) Create dynamic and exciting lessons with the support of various resources according to the proficiency level.
6) Write a small document/observations of what has been mentioned in the lesson, share it with the student.
7) Evaluate the progression and set a different goal (monthly)

E.g – Beginner level:
Lesson plan 1: Phonetic integration
Sounds – ‘ão’ and ‘am’

Introduce a set of words with those specific phonetics and their translations, if not possible to translate use images (e.g – vão, estão, cão, são, mão, andam, trabalham…). Allow the student to read them out loud, correcting pronunciation and accent.

Present a text, with the phonetics, the student will read out loud prior to this explain the context of the text and what the text is about.

Go over some of the vocabulary mentioned if the student wishes to

Review the text with the student pointing out some of the essential phonetics, and drill.

Play a Sporcle game where the student will have to choose the correct word according to what has been read.
