Sobre Christina
I'm an American that loves living in Brazil with my carioca husband. I've been in Rio de Janeiro for 6 years, so I know what it's like to need to learn a foreign language for daily life and for use in professional settings. In my work as a teacher I supported multilingual children who entered with various levels of English. I understand what it's like to learn a language as an adult, which is why my tutoring focus on helping adults learn at a comfortably challenging pace so you feel good about your growth in each lesson.
I taught for 10 years in American international schools in Saudi Arabia, India, and Brazil. I love traveling and learning about other cultures. Lessons with me are structured around conversation, so you will be talking about travel, culture, living abroad, and your interests. As a teacher and language student myself, I know that learners are most engaged when they are talking about their interests in a low-stakes environment 1-on-1.
Our tutoring conversations will feel casual as I stretch your English skills just enough to feel challenging, instead of overwhelming. I will ask for your preferences in how you like to be corrected, how you like to receive feedback, and whether homework supports or discourages you. Your needs will be embedded in our sessions and I'll always aim to have you leave our lesson feeling good and able to express your ideas more clearly and more confidently than before.

Just when you thought your English was "excellent", you come face-to-face with an English speaker and freeze. Yikes!
But if you were MY STUDENT, you'd confidently enter a conversation with that English speaker while smiling from ear-to-ear as you use your conversational English skills!
That's because freezing or feeling unsure is not just about your language skills, it's about how your past experiences with the language have trained your nervous system to react. Which is why you need a tutor who isn't just skilled in the language, but also knows how to overcome that hesitation and internal fear. That's why you should work with me.
I guide my English clients from where they are emotionally and in their language skills to becoming confident English speakers. You won't feel shame or embarrassment in my sessions. I will offer gentle corrections of your pronunciation, sentence structure, and vocabulary because I know exactly how to make growth feel safe.
I do not focus on preparing for exams, my goal is to help you use English in conversation.
I'm available most days. Please let me know which time zone you are in when you request lessons.
After the free 30-minute trial meeting, I will design a format that is focused on your learning goals. I highly suggest two 30-minute lessons a week instead of 1 hour. More consistency is better than once a week, just like going to the gym.
For example in my most recent 30-minute class...
- 5 minutes: catching up about something mentioned in the last lesson, such as a birthday party you would attend,
- 15 minutes: discussing one of your interest topics (i.e. European travel) with active listening and gentle corrections focused on your comprehension & pronunciation,
- 5 minutes: learning vocabulary words and phrases related to the day's topic (i.e. "hitchhike" and "double decker bus"),
- 5 minutes: providing feedback on your progress and allowing you to identify your next areas of focus in the language (i.e. pronunciations of 'through', 'thought' and 'thorough') so I can prepare for our future lessons.
It is my belief, from my experience, that to develop your speaking confidence and skills it is necessary to really want to express your ideas to the other person. This way your desire to share supersedes your resistance to making mistakes. Which is why we format the session to be centered on your interests and experiences.
If requested I can send you articles or videos that help you practice between our lessons (low-stakes homework assignments).
As an English conversation teacher, I use my experience as a primary classroom teacher to help you learn at a pace that is comfortable, yet challenging. I am patient, I know how to explain things in a different way to help you understand, and I focus on your specific needs. If you are uncomfortable or feeling stuck, I will pivot our approach to remove those feelings.

My English clients usually pay by PIX after their lesson. For 30-minutes it is $100 brl.
We can meet as often as you like. I had great success with one client who had 4 sessions per week for 6 weeks before an audition for an acting role in an English-language TV show. (They got the part!)
I always recommend that my English clients have a clear goal on a specific date (such as an audition, job interview, or social event), so that our work is bounded by that objective.
